Set within the peaceful surroundings of Montrás on Spain’s Costa Brava, this modern family home by Dom Arquitectura was designed with one clear goal in mind. To create a relaxed, light filled house where outdoor entertaining feels effortless and natural.
From the very first glance, the architecture makes its intentions clear. The facade combines large sections of dry local stone with smooth white upper volumes, softened by wood and glass elements. The contrast feels distinctly Mediterranean, grounding the home in its setting while still giving it a clean, contemporary edge.
A palette of natural tones runs throughout the exterior. Sand, stone and warm neutrals help the house sit comfortably within the landscape rather than dominate it. As daylight fades, discreet hidden lighting comes into play, gently washing both interior and exterior walls and highlighting the textures of stone and plaster after dark.
At the rear of the home, the focus shifts entirely to outdoor living. The backyard opens up to reveal a swimming pool and a generous partially covered patio, designed as an extension of the interior rather than a separate zone.
The infinity edge pool takes full advantage of the site’s outlook, offering uninterrupted views across the surrounding area. Alongside it, the covered patio is arranged for long, unhurried days outside. A lounge area with sofas and armchairs sits beside a dining space complete with an outdoor kitchen, creating a setting that easily moves from afternoon relaxation to evening gatherings.
Returning to the front of the house, a solid wood front door sets a warm, welcoming tone. It opens into an entryway anchored by a large window that immediately brings in natural light. The same stone walls used on the exterior continue seamlessly inside, reinforcing a sense of continuity between indoors and out.
The social heart of the home unfolds into an open plan living and dining area. These spaces are designed to feel connected yet calm, with carefully considered proportions that encourage both everyday family life and entertaining. Along one wood lined wall, a built in home office is subtly integrated, allowing work to sit comfortably within the living space without disrupting its flow.
Adjacent to the dining area, and visible through a pass through opening, is the kitchen. Here, minimalist white cabinets and countertops are balanced by wood cabinetry and open shelving. A central island anchors the room, creating a functional and social space that remains visually connected to the rest of the home.
Adding another layer to the living experience, the house includes a secondary living room lined in wood. A floor-to-ceiling window frames views of the stone wall and surrounding plants outside, turning the garden into a living backdrop and offering a quieter, more intimate retreat.
The warmth introduced through wood detailing continues into the bedrooms. Minimalist furniture keeps the focus on natural light and views, allowing the architecture and setting to take centre stage rather than competing with them.
In the bathrooms, the same balance of material and restraint is evident. Wood vanities with custom designed countertops sit beneath framed mirrors, while a built in bathtub is positioned to take advantage of a nearby window. The result is a calm, spa like atmosphere rooted in natural materials and soft light.
While all of the main living spaces are located on the ground floor for ease and flow, the house also includes a basement level. Here, auxiliary functions such as parking, storage, building facilities and a games room are neatly tucked away. This level is accessed via a set of wood stairs, where a handrail with hidden lighting adds both safety and a subtle architectural detail.
Throughout the home, Dom Arquitectura has carefully balanced modern design with Mediterranean warmth. Stone, wood, light and landscape are treated not as decorative elements, but as essential parts of daily life.
