Developed in Mexico, the Setto system by Linea Italia challenges the open office norm by offering privacy without isolation.
In workspace layouts, finding the perfect balance between collaboration and privacy is a key characteristic for office wellbeing. The modern open office concept, while fostering communication and teamwork, often falls short in providing the necessary privacy and comfort that workers sometimes need to maintain quiet productivity. Enter Setto, a modular partition system developed through the collaboration of Mexican manufacturer Linea Italia and Monterrey-based JDE Design Driven Consultancy.
Setto’s philosophy is based on a concept called “friendly privacy”, much needed in modern work environments. How can an office layout offer privacy without it becoming a barrier to collaboration? The answer lies in a system that emphasises soft forms and acoustic materials, creating both visual and auditory comfort in the workspace. Moving away from the 1980s’ rigid cubicle partitions, this approach represents a more nuanced understanding of personal space.

The system centres on balance: achieving equilibrium between simple visual language and structural robustness. Rather than barriers, Setto simply draws out micro-environments that naturally facilitate open communication and moments of introspection, allowing workers to seamlessly transition between different work modes.
Setto showcases remarkable technical sophistication through its modular assembly process. The components include posts, side panels, rear panels, and work surfaces that can be redesigned and reconfigures to form different arrangements. By first placing the posts, that serve as connection nodes, we define the joints of the system, and then can use any of the planar elements to create our space. The system is completed with the placement of upper covers, and can be integrated with leg modules for electrification or other accessories.
Rewriting the modern office through friendly privacy
The components are locally fabricated at Linea Italia‘s factory in Aguascalientes, central Mexico, using precision CNC cutting technology. This advanced manufacturing ensures consistent quality and allows for complex geometries in the system. The approach also reflects a commitment to detail, with acoustic felt surfaces and premium laminates that deliver a concise and pleasing design language. With loyalty to regional production and skilled craftsmanship, Setto also supports local economies while maintaining high quality standards.
The true strength of the Setto system lies in its impressive flexibility. The modular nature allows for multiple configuration options, choosing between linear arrangements, T-shaped configurations, zigzag patterns and more. It also allows new workers to customise their workspace from its previous owner, creating a homely space without the need of new materials. This adaptability allows the system to respond to various spatial constraints and needs, making it suitable for everyone from small studios to large corporate environments.

The development of Setto reflects broader reasonings about social responsibilities in design. By creating more comfortable, considerate, and productive work environments, the system contributes to employee satisfaction, wellbeing, and retention. The customisable potential of the system also allows it to grow as the company grows, allowing for reconfiguration instead of replacement.
The Setto system represents an advancement in workspace design, addressing the complex challenges that modern offices present. Through its combination of modular flexibility, acoustic performance, and aesthetic design, Setto creates spaces that support both individual productivity and collaborative work. As work environments continue to evolve in response to changing work patterns and employee expectations, Setto is designed to truly serve the people who use it.
