Nestled on the bank of a serene pond in Vysocina, Czech Republic, this small wooden cottage offers a peaceful retreat for a family looking to escape the bustle of city life. Designed by Atelier 111, the holiday home draws inspiration from traditional fisherman’s cabins, blending simplicity with functionality while embracing the surrounding natural beauty.
The cottage is composed of four small masses. Three are connected, forming the main living areas, while the fourth stands slightly apart, serving as a storage space with a covered porch. This separate structure is ideal for drying fisherman’s nets or simply enjoying quiet moments immersed in nature.
Despite strict local regulations limiting the built-up area to 50 m² and the maximum height to 5 meters, the architects created a clever layout that maximises the use of space. The central area is accessed through a minimal entrance via the kitchen, which also features a compact attic loft designed as a sleeping area for children.
Large windows and glass doors open the interiors to the outdoors, allowing natural light to flood the living spaces and offering views of the pond and the surrounding mature oaks. The living area faces the sunlit scenery, creating a calming environment that feels connected to the natural landscape.
Inside, wood covers the walls and ceilings, giving the cottage a warm, cozy feel. Furnishings are minimal, reflecting the simplicity of classic fisherman’s cabins. The kitchen and dining area form the heart of the home, while the living room features a fireplace for cooler evenings. The lofted sleeping area offers a private space for children, and the bathroom is tucked away efficiently, making the most of the small footprint.
The cottage’s design encourages a seamless indoor-outdoor lifestyle. From the kitchen and living spaces, residents can enjoy uninterrupted views of the pond, while the separated porch provides a sheltered spot to relax, reflect, or engage in traditional fisherman activities. The natural surroundings, from water reflections to mature oak trees, create a serene setting for family holidays.
The floor plan demonstrates how the small space has been cleverly organized. The connected masses accommodate daily living, dining, and sleeping needs, while the detached storage area adds functional versatility. The design optimizes the limited area while maintaining an open, airy feeling throughout.
This waterfront cottage, inspired by fisherman’s cabins, is an example of how design can combine tradition, simplicity, and modern comfort.
