In Bend, Oregon’s high desert, a home designed by DeForest Architects with interiors by NB Design Group draws inspiration from the textures and colors of its surroundings. The project reflects a close collaboration between owners and architects, creating a flexible home that adapts to moments of solitude, intimate gatherings, and lively social occasions.
Set against sweeping views of the Deschutes National Forest and snowcapped peaks, the house blends seamlessly into the desert landscape. The exterior palette was carefully chosen to reflect the varied textures and subtle colors of the environment, allowing the structure to sit quietly on the lot.
The entryway sets the tone for the home. At the heart of the entry is a 100-year-old lilac trunk, anchoring the space with an organic gesture that ties inside and outside together. A wall of vintage catcher’s masks and stand out against a white wall.
The living area is bright and expansive, yet completely adaptable thanks to a clever cabinet wall. Five sliding panels conceal or reveal a fireplace, TV, storage, and even parts of the bedroom suite.
The nearby dining area features a picture window that frames the tree views, while a solid wood table and chairs are anchored by a grey rug. Overhead, a trio pendant lights add a modern touch.
Bright and airy, the kitchen pairs crisp white cabinetry and a glass tile backsplash with warm wood floors. The island offers generous prep space and easy seating for quick meals, while stainless appliances add a clean edge, and open shelves keep glassware within reach.
The home office, with a desk for two, has a window positioned perfectly to frame the view, while above, a shelf provides a place to display books and decor.
Wrapped in windows, the bedroom wakes to mountain views. Soft white walls and bedding keep the palette quiet, while a mossy green throw adds a relaxed hit of color and a mid-century chair with graphic upholstery creates character without clutter.
In the bathroom, crisp white walls and oversized tile are paired with a deep espresso wood vanity, while brushed chrome fixtures, a striped rug, and a woven basket add texture.
Moody charcoal walls set a quiet backdrop for the powder room, while a crisp floating white vanity keeps the space feeling open and easy to maintain. A luminous ceiling panel washes the room in soft light, revealing a flock of black birds that turns the ceiling into artwork.
By weaving together flexibility, natural textures, and light-filled design, this Bend home reflects the desert landscape while providing the owners with a place to live, work, and welcome others.
